10 Easy Ways to Be More Active as a Family

Fitness has been on my mind a lot lately as I've been working on getting in better shape, and realize how much eating healthy and being active is important for my family's overall well-being. Most health experts will recommend getting at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day, and there are plenty of enjoyable and EASY ways to get your family more active!

  1. Go for a Walk: Whether it's putting the kids in the stroller and walking around town or strolling the mall, walking is one of the easiest exercises because you can do it anywhere. We like to take advantage of crisp cool mornings and evenings most!
  2. Get into Sports: Grab a ball and play a game of soccer, basketball or baseball together. Perhaps encourage your kids to play for a local sports team in a sport they enjoy. Get creative on hot days and play water balloon volley-ball, kiddie pool kick ball, or have a full-on water fight!
  3. Have Some Outdoor Fun: Play outdoor lawn games, such as, Boccee Ball, Jarts or Ladder Ball. Old-fashioned night games can be a lot of fun as well, including kick-the-can, sardines and hide-and-seek.
  4. Train for a Local Run/Walk: There are several community races held all year that are a great way to get exercising regularly in preparation.
  5. Swimming: Get out the kiddie pool or turn on the sprinklers. Or head to the public pool together, and consider putting the younger kids in swimming lessons.
  6. Jump place: Go to an activity center like a jump house or large trampolines that families can use at an affordable rate. Three that may be near you are Kangaroo Zoo, Jump on It, and Jumpin' Jacks.
  7. Playground: Head to one of your local parks and let the kids play at the playground while the adults play outdoor games, such as, disc golf or walk/run around the playground area.
  8. Hiking: Take a drive up to one of your favorite canyons to hike around and enjoy the scenic adventure.
  9. Farmers Markets: Visit your local farmers market to get some exercise and buy healthy home-grown foods or fun crafts.
  10. Family Field Trip: Teach your kids about the world while walking around at the zoo, aquarium, or museum.
