Navajo Tacos Recipe

When I was on a voluntary mission for my church several years ago in Texas, we visited with an Indian family that was struggling financially. The mom was a great cook and we helped her with making some Navajo Tacos to sell to neighbors and friends. Cooking these tacos again recently I was taken back to that time, and the influence that had on me and friendships made.

Fry bread Ingredients:

2 cups flour
1 Tbsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
3/4 - 1 cup hot water
oil for frying

Directions:

1. Combine flour, baking soda, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Slowly add the water to form a soft ball of dough. Knead a few times then prepare to cook or let them rest for up to an hour.

2. Pull off pieces to roll into balls about the size of a golf ball. Then roll out each ball on a floured surface with a rolling pin till about 1/8 inch thick.

3. Heat about 2 inches of oil in a deep pan to about 375 degrees (medium-high). Fry one at a time until golden brown, flipping with tongs to cook both sides. The dough will puff up while cooking.

4. Allow to cool on paper towel. Recipe yields about 7 pieces of fry bread. (We doubled the recipe for our family of 5.)

5. Prepare and add your desired toppings. I love this homemade chili recipe by Home Maid Simple!

Other optional toppings: shredded cheese, diced tomatoes, sliced olives, shredded lettuce, sour cream, and salsa.

ENJOY!!

For dessert just add some honey butter or butter and jelly!
